I am safe - Protests in Istanbul

First of all, I am safe. Many of you have probably seen/read the news about all of the protests going on in Istanbul, Turkey, and around the world at this point and I wanted to let you know I am safe. Since I am not a news reporter I don't want to go too in depth about what is going on so here are a few links to articles:

What started out yesterday as people occupying Gezi Park, a historic park, so that it wouldn't be converted into a shopping mall, has now turned into people protesting the government and wanting the current people in government to resign. It was somewhat bad yesterday during the day when I was at work, and we all watched it on the news, but it has progressively gotten much worse. The police have used a lot of tear gas and I felt it yesterday evening. The public transportation has been shut down and many people in their cars have been honking constantly in protest. Last night was an interesting experience for me because at about 1am my entire neighborhood, and supposedly a lot of Istanbul, started flickering their lights, banging on pots and pans, and blowing whistles. People were up all night protesting. Now it has spread to a lot of other cities in Turkey and around the world.

I have stayed in all day, safe in my home, although my roommate and her friends have been out protesting. About an hour ago my nose started tingling and I realized that the must have used so much tear gas that it was coming in through the windows of my house. I closed all of the windows and hopefully it will go away soon. I do not plan on leaving my house, so just know that I am safe. #direngeziparki #occupygezi
